- Numerous standards have been developed, by various countries, for radiation protection apparel.
- These include DIN (Germany), JS (Japan) and ISI (India).
- The IEC 61331-3 and IEC 1331-1 standards, developed by the International Electro technical Commission, are the benchmark standards for protection of radiologists, radiographers and patients.

- Lead equivalence of a radiation protection apparel is equivalent to lead metal thickness
- Lead metal possesses the property of stopping X-Rays, and its use to an appropriate extent leads to appropriate protection.
