Radiation Defined

  • Radiation is emission and propagation of energy in the form of electromagnetic waves or particles, which may be either ionising or non-ionising. Shorter the wavelength, higher is the penetration power.

Need for Protection
  • X-Ray radiation affects the cells of the body and may cause DNA damage within a short span or after a longer period.
  • Some effects are repairable, while some are irreparable and may lead to cell death.
  • Male and female reproductive organs are also prone to radiation risk.
  • Pregnant women along with their unborn fetus are prone to permanent radiation hazard.
  • Deformities may also carry to the next generation.

Effects of Non-Protection

Condition of patient's back following multiple coronary angiography and angioplasty procedures. Effects of regular, prolonged exposure on radiographer's hand. Result of constant exposure to X-radiation on the eyes. Appearance of patient's back following skin grafting procedure.
